When Israel finally crossed the Jordan River into Canaan, God commanded that they take a dozen stones from the riverbed, one to symbolize each tribe, and set them up in their camp on the other side “to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. . . . These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”
Absalom's Tomb is built on the lower western foothills of the Mount of Olives, facing the old city of on the eastern side of the Kidron valley. This entire area is a large cemetery with thousands of tombs, and this is one of the famous and largest of all.
