Boundary of the Herod's Temple (the third Temple).  Herod's Temple was one of the larger construction projects of the 1st century B.C.  Herod was interested in perpetuating his name for all eternity through building projects, and his construction program was extensive.  He had magnificent palaces in Masada, Caesarea and Tiberias.  Herod built temples for various pagan gods to serve the gentile populations, which were paid for by heavy taxes on the local Jewish population.

When Israel finally crossed the Jordan River into Canaan, God commanded that they take a dozen stones from the riverbed, one to symbolize each tribe, and set them up in their camp on the other side “to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. . . . These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”[6]

The Pools of Bethesda were a series of reservoirs and medicinal pools which are now in the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City in Israel. Archeologists have determined one of Jesus' healing miracles occurred here.
