AT A TIME WHEN MOST ARTISTS are in the sunset of their careers, Alma Thomas (1891-1978) was on the rise. She was recognized for her expressive abstract paintings, her exuberant use of color and the technical acumen with which she executed patterns. In 1972, the 1st woman to earn an art degree from Howard became the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York.
