"The First Ragged School, Westminster" by Alexander Blaikley (1851) at the Birmingham Museums, Birmingham - From the curators' comments: "This first free school for destitute children was opened in Westminster in 1839. These schools received their name when the first 'Ragged School Union' was formed in 1844."
