An important Coclé gold necklace of twin-alligator pendants. This rare necklace most likely belonged to a member of the elite. The crested alligator is an important motif throughout Coclé art. The original inserts in this piece were damaged in the tomb’s ritual fire and could originally have been carved from sperm whale tooth, manatee rib, shell, or stones such as serpentine, quartz, opal or emerald. | Bonhams - Published: Sotheby's New York 1997
