Between 1919 and 1933, the Bauhaus School, based first in Weimar and then in Dessau, revolutionized architectural and aesthetic concepts and practices. RATIONAL/FUNCTIONAL: Fagus Shoe Factory, Alfeld-an-der-Liene, Germany, Walter Gropius and Adolph Meyer (1911): Gropius' "etherealization" is evident here, his fascination with lightness is seen in the windows. Slender (and lighter coloured) verticals and thicker horizontals emphasise the openness of window openings. Note, the construction was not executed particularly well, the foundations are of mixed pebble concrete, not reinforced by steel. Floors were not braced for shear.
