Evolucionó de un modo muy personal. Reconocido en el registro civil como hijo por Roland Truffaut, un delineante (o arquitecto y decorador), François Truffaut nunca llegó a conocer a su verdadero padre. Su madre era Jeanine de Montferrand, secretaria en el periódico L'Illustration.
