Katharine McCormick (1875-1967) was vice president and treasurer of the National American Woman Suffrage, and became vice president of the League of Women Voters after the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920. A biologist and the second woman to graduate from MIT, she funded the research necessary to develop the first birth control pill. Katharine is also responsible for funding women’s housing at her alma mater, MIT. She had a profound impact on our society and women’s rights.

She was an interpreter and guide for Lewis and Clark in 1805-1806 with her husband Toussaint Charbonneau. She navigated carrying her son, Jean Baptiste, on her back. She traveled thousands of miles from the Dakotas the Pacific Ocean. The explorers, said she was cheerful, never complained, and proved to be invaluable. She served as an advisor, caretaker.
