Counting the number of words in sentences will increase students’ phonological awareness. By counting words in a sentence, students will practice sentence segmentation. The activities included are designed for small group intervention and/or independent learning centers. Additionally, counting words in sentences helps readers develop the skill “concept of word.” Concept of word is the ability to match spoken words to written words while reading. Readers who have developed this skill understand that words are separated by spaces.
