The Cypriot cabinet has declared Tuesday and possibly Wednesday a bank holiday for fear of capital flight as depositors are certain to withdraw huge sums from the Cypriot banks after the haircut imposed. The European Central Bank insists on a rapid voting because of signs a domino effect will follow across European lenders and markets from Monday.    There is fear of market unrest on Monday when stocks may crumble in the eurozone and bank accounts in other southern European bank may suffer.

The Cypriot cabinet has declared Tuesday a bank holiday, for fear of capital flight, and this may even be stretched to Wednes.

Dutch Eurogroup head Jeroen Dijsselbloem has hinted that the eurozone has its eye on future Cypriot gas revenues as a way for the island to repay - with interest- its €10bn loan from the troika. "As part of the intervention in Cyprus, the banking sector has more or less wrung its neck. The IMF expects a contraction of 50pc. The country must cut back, increasing taxation and tourism. So our thoughts go immediately to the recently discovered gas field off the coast of Cyprus."

German Finance Minister Wolfgang says criticism in wake of Cyprus deal is like jealousy in classroom | "It always works out like that," he said. "This also happens in classrooms. Sometimes when you have better results others have difficulties with this, sometimes they are even a little jealous." The WSJ says IMF Christine Lagarde tried to calm Schaeuble down during tense negotiations in Brussels as the troika and Cypriot officials attempted to reach an agreement.
