Afternoon dress, Halling, Pearce & Stone, London, 1879-81. Satin, trimmed w/figured silk, chenille tassels & machine lace, lined w/silk & cotton, reinforced w/whalebone. Victoria & Albert Museum: "This ensemble demonstrates the ‘over-upholstered’ look, with a variety of fabrics, rows of tassels and lace embellishment .... Hitherto the train was found only on evening dress, but the high neckline & elbow-length sleeves indicate that this dress was for formal afternoon wear."
