the light shines through an open tunnel between two walls, and casts shadows on the ground
Newgrange was built as a ritual celebration of the annual Winter Solstice sunrise. It is a powerful symbol of Creation, Birth, Death and Rebirth – of the year, the phases of the moon, and the lives of all beings. At the Solstice, the “celestial sun ” travels down the passage-entrance as a shaft of golden light, entering the ‘womb’ of the earth at the time of greatest darkness.

Once and Future Things
The Mullamast Stone, from 500-600 in Ireland. There are 4 blade marks on the left side of the stone and 2 deep ones on top, suggesting that the stone was used as part of a “sword in the stone” kingship ritual. The perpetuation of the importance of the “sword in the stone,” which comes from Arthurian legend, demonstrates the continuity of Celtic rituals even after the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.

County Fermanagh’s Lough Erne is home to many fascinating islands laden with ancient ruins. Catch a ferry from Castle Archdale to White Island to examine the isle’s mysterious stone figures. These date back to the 6th century, but form part of the walls of a 12th century church. The carvings are thought to have been seized during a Viking raid in the 9th century before being discovered by workmen 400 years later. They then used them in the construction of the church, itself now in ruins.
