Jonines. Celebration of longest day and shortest night in a middle of summer
On 5 may we celebrate the date back in 1945 when the Germans in our country were beaten and the Netherlands got their freedom back .
Each year we celebrate Lithuanian King Mindaugas Coronation Day. Mindaugas was the only king in Lithuanian history. On 6th of July we are used to remember the history of our country and participate in concerts to honor king Mindaugas.
Now in 2014 we call it Kingsday, but previously it was called Queensday. It's a day to celebrate gratitude for our royal family.
Pancake day! It is a celebration when an effigy of winter is burnt, this symbolize the defeat of winter.
Each year we celebrate a carnival with parades full of disguised people and vehicles. The celebration is more common in the south of the Netherlands compared to the rest.
During Easter in the Netherlands it's for many families a ritual to hide eggs and sweets in their garden for their kids to find while believing it's the Easter bunny who put them there.
Sinterklaas is a Dutch celebration every year at 5 December. Kids get presents from their parents believing it's Sinterklaas and his "Zwarte Pieten" who gave them because they behaved well during the year. A little bit the same concept as Christmas.
