Cute Baby Animals
We’re crushing on Sita the baby silver leaf langur. Langur babies are orange while their parents are black. It’s thought this color distinction makes it easier for the whole troop to identify and look after the infants. The youngster’s color usually changes within the first six months, when the juvenile becomes an almost perfect copy of the adults. Photo by Debbie Beals
Orangutans, whose name means “people of the forest,” live in tropical and swamp forests on the Southeast Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra. These shaggy red apes are the largest arboreal mammal and the only great ape found in Asia. The other great apes—gorillas, chimpanzees, and bonobos—are all native to Africa.| Satu by Official San Diego Zoo, via Flickr
The Angolan colobus monkeys at the San Diego Zoo have a new addition to their group. The large multigenerational family group, led by breeding male Milo, welcomed a cute baby boy this month—and because of a unique behavioral trait, every one of them will get a chance to help raise him. Over the next six months, the new arrival, which was born with a striking all-white coat, will be seen being carried and cared for by different members of the group.
Related to monkeys and apes, lemurs are prosimians, which literally means “pre-monkey.” It refers to the fact that this group specialized from the main primate lineage long before monkeys did. Meet the pros of the San Diego Zoo’s Africa Rocks exhibit on Zoonooz.
