The Scold's Bridle, a British invention, possibly originating in Scotland, used between the 16th and 19th Century. It was a device used to control, humiliate and punish gossiping, troublesome women by effectively gagging them. Scold comes from the 'common scold': a public nuisance, more often than not women, who habitually gossiped and quarrelled with their neighbours, while the name bridle describes the part that fitted into the mouth.
Laura Mulvey’s groundbreaking psychoanalytic essay “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” -- argues that in Hollywood films, women are presented as objects to be looked at by men on the screen as well as the viewer, who is presupposed by the film itself to be male (possessing a "male gaze"). A Muslim cleric has condemned to death Amina Tyler, a young 19 year old Tunisian who published a picture of herself topless on her Facebook account with the phrase: “My body belongs to me, and is not the source of anyone’s honor.” She is a member of the group Femen, a feminist movement emerged in Ukraine in 2008 performing their topless protests to draw attention. The unusual protest sparked rejection from her own family, considered it as “insulting the modesty of a woman” and Islam.
