'Operation Market Garden' began 17.9.1944, involving U.S. 82nd & 101st Airborne Divisions, Commonwealth 1st Airborne Division & Polish Parachute Brigade. Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery (commonly known as the Airborne Cemetery) contains graves of most of those killed during the September landings & many of those killed in later fighting in the area. There are 1680 WWII Commonwealth servicemen buried or commemorated here. 245 are unidentified, 2 casualties commemorated by special memorials.
