Garfield Park Conservatory

A few weeks ago I was visiting my children in Illinois and one of the places they took me to was the Garfield Park Conservatory. Plant Crush: Meet The Tree Fern

Tree fern. The name sounds like a bit of a contradiction, as we’re used to thinking of ferns as the lush green plants that fill the understory of our Northwest forests. This fernery at Benmore Botanic Garden, nestled against the steep contour of the hillside, was built in the 1870s by James Duncan, a wealthy sugar refiner . It is thought that the fernery, being expensive to maintain, started into decline after the change of ownership in 1889. It was restored in 2008/09 to its old glory. As there was little left of the old roof, it was decided to erect a new glazed barrel-vaulted roof constructed with modern materials. The vault over the entrance was…

C19th ferneries, greenhouses & conservatories

It is said that by the late Georgian years, everyone in England was becoming excited about the science of exotic plants: collecting, studying and classifying specimens from all over the world. In time it was ferns that fascinated country home residents and gentlemen botanists. Bicton Park palm house, 1820 The Palm House at Bicton Park in Devon is the earliest glass structure I could find. It dates back to the 1820s and was amazingly constructed using 18,000 panes of glass. 1st Baron Rolle…
