I haven't been so good about sharing art projects this year. I grabbed my p+s yesterday so that I could share this little collaborative free time project. As any Art teacher knows students work at very different speeds. There always ends up being extra time for some students while others…

off to a hot start.

My goodness. Nothing like a solid week of near triple digits to kick off the school year. The heat has been oppressive. That said the kids have done a great job keeping it together in our fan cooled classrooms. Only a couple have actually melted;) Despite the heat, the art learning is off to a great start in room 18. This year, like the past couple years, I did a collaborative project with my 3rd, 4th, and 4th graders the first week. I meet with each of the classes for an abbreviated lesson…

Collaborative Watercolor Painting

This was an interesting project to watch as it came together. Kindergarten completed large watercolor resist art pieces. I painted the big black lines and they filled in. I didn't give them specific instructions as to how I wanted them to fill these in, that was left up to them. I wanted to see how they went about the process themselves. All they were told is that they would use crayon to add details and watercolor to fill space with color. You could really see who the take charge…

That's one of my favorite lines from the Lorax and I loved getting all into it with my kids at home when reading the book to them. It also suits this first week back to school project pretty well too:) School started this week here at Zamo and we are getting back in the creative mindset. For the past 4 years I have done a collaborative art mini lesson with the upper grade students to give them a low stress opportunity to create and to go over my art room rules and expectations. I LOVE doing…

Collaborative Circle Art

--> Grade 2 artists are busy in their regular classes investigating new artists and art styles. Their current unit of inquiry, “Tell me a Picture” is all about art! In visual art class, we have been working on a very special project. It’s a large collaborative artwork that will be on display for the Grade 2 end of unit art show. Every student in Grade 2 will have an opportunity to add to the artwork. Students are learning what it means to collaborate, what kinds of words we use when we…

HANDS

I've been off work for a while so the blog has been a bit neglected. This was the lesson that I left my classes to do in my absence. The classes started with the old "draw round the hand" technique, then they drew some of the observed lines. The shapes were cut out, leaving the thick lines behind and stuck down on another hand to create a collograph or paper print. As part of the same lesson the students can also play about with simple stencil prints. Pupils can also create some rubbings…
