Baselard Most men wore daggers at their belts, partly for protection in the streets but also because it was fashionable. Large daggers like this, with blades as big as those of swords, were known as 'baselards': the fashion came from Basel, in Switzerland. Swords from the Castillon Hoard. Generally dated to around 1453, they were some of 80-odd swords found a sunken barge in the Dordogne river. Type XVIII (left) and type XV (those to the right), all show the inset pommels popular in that era for single-handed swords.
