John D. Rockefeller, Cleveland's wealthiest citizen, purchased this home on the south side of Euclid Avenue & East 40th streets in 1868. Some 11 years later, 1879 Rockefeller purchased a mansion next door to him, moved it around the corner so that he now had a country estate of over 2 acres to enjoy. Rockefeller had in his will that the family home was to be torn down upon his death. The land was then sold & turned into a parking lot & a gas station, not one of Standard Oil's.
