October 30, 1951, Clarence "Leo" Fender was awarded a patent for a new stringed instrument component. It was a combined bridge and pickup mounted onto a single plate for use in electric guitars. It was easily installed, and easily replaced. This plate would find its way into the line of Telecasters (born as Esquires and then Broadcasters) that would make Leo's name famous around the world.
