A revolution is happening in Barefoot College in rural Rajasthan, India. It is a quiet revolution that brings solar energy and clean technology to the poorest rural communities, changing the face of rural development. At the forefront of this revolution are semiliterate or illiterate rural women from Asia, Africa and Latin America, many of them grandmothers, who are trained to become skilled solar engineers.

'Solar Mamas' Rafea is an uneducated Bedouin mother from the Jordanian desert. She gets the chance to go to the Barefoot College in India where middle-aged women from poor communities train to become solar engineers to bring power to their communities.
