Gerrit van Honthorst (Utrecht 1590-1656) - Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange (1584-1647)

Honthorst was a Dutch painter born and trained in Utrecht. His early career was spent in Rome, where he attained great success as a follower of Caravaggio. In 1620 he returned to Utrecht and largely abandoned religious themes in favour of Arcadian and domestic subjects and portraits. During this period Honthorst received a number of commissions from the exiled Queen Elizabeth of Bohemia, sister of Charles I and through these became known to the English King. Princess Sophie of Wurttemberg, queen of the Netherlands as the 1st wife of William III. Niece of Tsars Alexander I and Nicholas I of Russia. She did not get on with her mother in law, her aunt Anna Pavlovna, who dominated the king. William and Sophie argued about their children (none lived to succeed the king) and his numerous affairs. (Queen Victoria called him an uneducated farmer.)
