Sister Helena Sarle (1867-1956) Canterbury, developed consumption when she was only 23. To help her recover the Elders encouraged to to stay active. Sister Helena pursued her talents and passions well into old age. Although still weak from the disease, Sister Helena was constantly active. She would take the young girls on berry picking expeditions, help put on musical productions, and paint postcards for the shop well into her 80s. Chapter 15: The Shakers. They were the largest and most well known group of utopian societies in the United States during the 19th century. This group united with the Quakers and were known collectively as the "Shaking Quakers" because of how they worshiped.
